Action Items for This Winter
The first day of winter is just around the corner. And before very cold weather arrives, here’s your winter home maintenance checklist to get your home prepared for the coming season.
Check Your Roof
Check your roof, gutters and gable vents. Remove leaves and other debris from gutters and downspouts. Keep an eye out for damage; any damage can make it easier for pests to gain access to your house and attic. Pests love attics because they are full of nice warm insulation for nesting, and they offer easy access to the rest of the house.
Check Your Siding
Take a walk around your property and look for signs of damage to the siding and foundation. Seal gaps where critters could enter. Mice need only a tiny gap to be able to sneak into your house. Fill small holes and cover any larger gaps securely with heavy-duty screen or hardware cloth to keep the wildlife outdoors.
Inspect and Add Weather Stripping
For energy efficiency and to keep bugs out, weather stripping applied around the frames of windows and doors will boost winter warmth and cut energy costs. Add door sweeps to the base of drafty doors to keep heat in and cold air out.
